Life Member Tour of Fanshawe’s School of Aviation Technology

On Wednesday April 27, the London Section Life Member (LM) Affinity Group organized a lunch and tour. Despite a small attendance, those who did attend thoroughly enjoyed the day.

First there was an informative tour of Fanshawe College’ s School of Aviation Technology. The school offers federally recognized technician programs in avionics maintenance and aircraft maintenance. We saw their training labs including a simulator and then toured the hanger where they have numerous decommissioned aircraft for training purposes Their drone operation course sparked some particular interest. Thanks to James Mallory, Program Co-ordinator – Avionics for giving the tour.

We then adjourned to the Katana Kafe for lunch and a bit of discussion about the LM group.

Lastly there was a tour of the Diamond Aircraft Industries manufacturing facility. The plant has a long history including manufacturing Mosquito bombers during WW II. We saw their avionics assembly which combines high technology with craftsmanship. We then followed the process for molding the air frame. painting it, installing the avionics, accessories, etc. and final preparation for acceptance. We saw a range of their products from 2 to 6 seaters with single and twin engines. Thanks to Chris Wood, Avionics Designer, for taking the time to give us a tour and provide his insight into their processes.

Hope to see more members at our next event – to be announced.
