TransCanada Microwave System Milestone Dedication – London Section

During the early-1950’s, the operational feasibility of using inter-city microwave relays for telephone and television transmission was proven, first in Atlantic Canada and later in Central Canada. The effort soon shifted to overcoming the various financial and regulatory hurdles that made deployment of a coast-to-coast telephone and television network a truly daunting task.

On 8 March 1955, construction of the national system began. Just over three years later, on 18 June 1958, operation of the entire network was successfully demonstrated. The system was officially opened on 1 July 1958 via a live coast-to-coast television broadcast called “A Memo to Champlain” and celebrated by a commemorative booklet.

London Section 2020 AGM

London Section held our 76th Annual General Meeting on Nov 20.  This was a virtual event but had all the usual activities except the meal.

Executive elections were held and the executive slate for 2021 will be:

Secretary, Dimitri Manias

Maike Luiken, Past IEEE Canada President and VP-Elect of IEEE MGA for 2021, gave an informative presentation on IEEE activities and plans.

The Science and Policy Issues of Climate Change and Addressing Those Issues

Dr. Gordon McBean provided an informative and entertaining presentation on the topic “The Science and Policy Issues of Climate Change and Addressing These”.  This was a joint Life Member and Young Professional event.  Dr McBean shared his expertise from being involved in many of the climate change meetings and provided several personal anecdotes.  A copy of his presentation can be found at https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/209745 at the bottom of the window.

Robotics Systems Presentation and ACEB Tour

On June 5, a few London section Life Members and other members attended a presentation over lunch on UWO’s Robotic Systems program by Dr. Ana Luisa Trejos in the new Amit Chakma Engineering Building (ACEB).  Dr. Trejos then lead a tour of the Robotics Systems labs showing the innovations in lab set up and discussing some of the research she is leading. IEEE London Award at the annual Thames Valley Science and Engineering Fair

The winners of the IEEE London Award at the annual Thames Valley Science and Engineering Fair in April 2019 were Reza Mozaffaripour with a study entitled “Electric Cars: A Fad or the Future?” and Shayan Mahmood with a research project entitled “DeepWave; An Early Diagnostic Tool for Cardiovascular Diseases using and an Intelligent ECG System.  They are shown in the photo below – Shayan on the left, Reza on the right, with IEEE award presenter Murray MacDonald.

WIE London Awards

IEEE London Section is proud to celebrate the recognition two IEEE WIE Awards:

The Women in Engineering affinity group of the IEEE London Section has been recognized with the WIE Affinity Group of the Year Award for 2018! Honourable mentions went to the WIE Toronto AG and the WIE Honduras AG.

In addition, Elena Uchiteleva, past (and founding) chair of WIE London section has been selected for the Inspiring Student Member of the Year Award!

Thames Valley Science and Engineering Fair

Our IEEE section once again sponsored 2 awards for Engineering projects at the Thames Valley Science and Engineering Fair at Althouse College, Western on April 7 and 8.  Here is a photo of IEEE member Khaled Alhazmi, Western, who presented the awards to Emma Ross, H.Beal Secondary, and  Aditi Basdeo, A.B. Lucas Secondary, for their project “Panda – Efficiently monitoring and reducing energy use on HVAC” and Julia Guerten, Kensal Park F.I. for her project “Solar Tracking Panel”  Congratulations to the winners!
