IEEE PES London Chapter welcomed Dr. Akira Tokuhiro, Dean of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science at Ontario Tech University, on 12 March 2020, for a seminar on Small Modular Nuclear Reactors.  Dr. Tokuhiro spoke of of the challenges involved in trying to bring these new reactor designs to market.

PES Seminar: Leveraging Technology to Create a Smarter and Greener Grid

Wednesday, November 21st, 2018

On 20 November 2018 at Western University, Allan Van Damme, P.Eng, CPA, CMA, the Director of Operations at London Hydro, presented an overview of several areas where London Hydro is using innovative advanced technologies in their operations. The topics included the downtown low-voltage mesh network, the outage management system, and the integration of smarter systems, including distributed generation units, microgrids, and electric vehicles. Dr. Jin Jiang, the Chair of the IEEE PES London Chapter, also presented Mr. Van Damme with the Chapter Outstanding Engineer Award for 2017.

PES Seminar: Development of Safety Culture in Engineering Practice

Monday, May 15th, 2017
Gary Johnson and Dr. Jin Jiang, IEEE London PES Chapter Chair Gary Johnson answering questions

The IEEE London PES Chapter hosted a seminar by Gary Johnson entitled “Development of Safety Culture in Engineering Practice” on 15 May 2017 at Western Engineering. Mr Johnson is an internationally recognized expert in safety-related instrumentation and control systems, safety and reliability analysis, and severe accident monitoring systems for nuclear power plants. His presentation discussed the importance of establishing safety culture in the work place by looking at several past severe nuclear accidents. In each case, investigators learned a lot of valuable lessons during post-accident analysis, and subsequently made operation of the systems safer through regulations, engineering safety analysis, and culture changes. He also explained some of his own personal principles of safety analysis for engineering systems.
